Had an incredibly productive weekend - movie wise :)
It began with me watching ‘The Romantics’ starring Josh Duhamel, Anna Paquin and Katie Holmes. Let me say straight out that the soundtrack is FANTASTIC. The track “Brutal Hearts” by Bedouin Soundclash has become my new obsession!
Story wise, I felt that the script is a bit weak - I found a lot of the characters very superficial in their behaviour but then there is also this strange uninhibitedness in all of them which is refreshing - they don’t judge themselves or each other, so heck, why should I? The film is shot beautifully - some of the long shots are so exquisite, I found them imprinted in my mind for a long time after I had finished the movie. The chemistry between Holmes and Duhamel is heartbreaking yet crackling at the same time - every look exchanged is timed to perfection, leaving you tingling, wondering how far they’ll let themselves get caught up in the predicament they find themselves in. Anna Paquin’s character is masterfully drawn out - definitely a ‘actions are louder than words’ kind of person who doles out her frustrations in bite-sized portions - it is almost comical.
Then, I watched the remake of ‘Footloose’. I hated it. Nothing stood out - except the bright blue eyes of the female lead. Maybe I feel this way because I absolutely adore Kevin Beacon in the original.
Finally, I watched ‘500 Days of Summer’ starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel. This movie confirms that I have a thing for the Deschanel sisters. I liked the non-linear narrative, the soundtrack, the randomness. I like I didn’t get caught up too quickly in any of the phases - I was able to the ‘move’ with the film, and it was easy and light. I also found myself being ok with the way the movie ended, KNOWING that there was a thin line between absolutely hating it to the point of terming it bullshit. I think on the surface, if you wanted to see it is a tragedy you could, but I left the movie not hating either of them despite the numerous, inexplicable, pathetic unreasonable actions they both committed at various intervals - so I’d understand how easy it would be for someone to pan the film for being too ‘theoretical’ and random at the same time.
Also “I love us” - genius.
